Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are made up of seven large islands, several small ones and the two capitals: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the two largest islands). The archipelago has plenty to offer those seeking year-long sunshine, and the diversity of the landscape means that in the space of an hour you can go from the lunar-like terrain of the Teide volcano, to the touristy beaches of Playa de las Americas…or from the street life of Las Palmas to the desserts of Maspalomas.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to organizing your trip to the islands: sunbathing and water sports are possible all year round, discover the marine-life of the surrounding waters – including dolphin and whale watching, ride a camel across the desert of Maspalomas or watch the sunset from the summit of the Teide volcano.

If food and festivities are more your thing, then sample the local cuisine: potatoes or “papas” are one of the most well-known dishes, served with “mojo” – traditional Canarian dipping sauces. There is an abundance of sea-food, and locals are known for their diet rich in vegetables, served in a variety of soups and stews. “El Diablo” restaurant in Lanzarote is known for cooking its food over volcanic heat.

The islands’ annual Carnival celebrations are some of the most eye-catching and spectacular in the world – considered second to Rio de Janeiro. Taking place every February, the warm climate is perfect for street parades and parties, with party-goers travelling from all over the world to experience them.
